Homecoming enlistment

Lt.Col. Dan Bertsch, a staff judge advocate (SJA) with the 119th Wing, North Dakota National Guard, shakes hands with his daughter's boyfriend, Brian Smelden after swearing him into the North Dakota Air National Guard at Hector International Airport in Fargo on June 11. The swearing in took place shortly after he returned from a year-long deployment in Afghanistan, prior to that he served in Iraq for seven months. In the last two years, Bertsch has been deployed more than 18 months; this was his 14th voluntary deployment since Sept. 11, 2001.
