Steven Kennedy, of the 219th Security Forces Squadron, shine flashlights on an earthen flood levee as they monitor for possible problem areas of the flood protection barrier April 8, near 40th Ave. south in Fargo, N.D. The North Dakota National Guard members are monitoring the flood protection levees on 12-hour shifts, 24-hours a day until the flood waters recede. As of Saturday April 9, appoximately 450 N.D. Air and Army Guardsman are on flood response for the 2011 flood fight.

North Dakota Air National Guard volunteers place sandbags onto a ring dike levee April 7 north of Fargo, N.D., around the home of Senior Master Sgt. Sandi and Master Sgt. Charles Renville, who also are members of the North Dakota Air National Guard. A combination of civilian and National Guard volunteers showed up on their own time to make sure the home is safe from rising floodwaters.

The flood-fighting sandbag is one of several bags being filled in preperation for possible flood emergencies in the Red River Valley area of eastern North Dakota. The one-ton sandbags can be lowered into place using a N.D. National Guard U-60 Blackhawk helicoptor in the event of a flood emergency.

The pair of North Dakota Air National Guard members are among the first North Dakota National Guard members tasked with keeping sightseers off of the flood dikes during the 2011 flood and also to monitor the clay dikes for possible trouble spots that could become breaches in the dike if they are left unchecked.
